through exemplary volunteer service
Jerri, who was born and raised in Trenton, is the Founder
and Executive Director of the
Young Scholar’s Institute which provides educational, cultural, and recreational activities
for area youth in Trenton. The after-school non-profit learning center’s programs include
one-to-one tutoring, academic enrichment classes, SAT preparation classes, college
tours, college admissions workshops and parent workshops. The Young Scholars Institute
provides daily after school enrichment activities for 270 students. Annually, close
to 1,500 young people participate in a Young Scholars’ program.
Jerri also assisted in the founding of Trenton Community Charter School (TCCS), which
opened in 1997. TCCS is
a math, science and technology focused charter school that enrolls 600 students in grades kindergarten through eight. TCCS provides a “family-centered” learning atmosphere that encourages and welcomes the participation of parents as equal partners in their children’s education. |

Jerri currently serves on the Boards of the New Jersey Conference for Community and
Justice, and the Mary Owen Borden Foundation. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc. and Central New Jersey Links, Inc. She has received numerous awards for service to the community including the New Jersey Governor’s Teacher Recognition Award, the Teacher of the Year Award at Trenton Central High School, the National Conference for Community Justice Award, the Trenton Branch of the NAACP Trailblazers’ Award and the Metropolitan Trenton African American Chamber of
Commerce Award.
