Young Scholars’ Institute (YSI) became one of only three Trenton-based
organizations to receive a New Jersey After 3 grant to expand its
after school program. The current program has served students from
Trenton Community Charter School (TCCS) since the school’s
opening in 1997. The expansion enables YSI to increase the number
of participants from eighty to 300 students and enhance the range
of programming to include more cultural and recreational activities.
For the past seven years, YSI has been a primary source of enrichment
resources for TCCS families. The grant from New Jersey After 3 provides
a unique opportunity for YSI and TCCS to maximize their resources
and establish an official partnership. The funding also makes the
program financially accessible to all TCCS families by reducing
the cost of the program from $35 per week to $3 per week.
The after school program is held Monday through Friday from 3 p.m.
to 6 p.m. Participants are from grades Kindergarten through eighth.
The academic component includes homework assistance, tutoring and
supplemental education services. The non-academic component includes
character education, the 100 Book Challenge, creative writing, music,
art and more structured recreational activities.
The after school program is one of twenty-three educational, cultural
and recreational enrichment programs YSI provides the Trenton community
year-round. Other programs include SAT Preparation, college tours,
college admissions workshops, science exploration and Princeton
Model Congress.
